Summer 2024 Reminder

Dear Parents,

Preventing summer slide is a problem all students face. Skills that are learned need to be practiced to ensure ongoing proficiency. It is important to provide learning opportunities throughout the summer to keep your child’s academic skills sharp.  Here are our suggestions to help with summer slide:

Upper Elementary Summer Reading
This summer we are assigning Lisa McMann’s book, Map of Flames. This book is sure to keep everyone’s interests. It’s a combination of XMen and Spy Kids. We will discuss the elements of the book the first week back to school and there may be a special “surprise” for those who finished reading the book.
      • This book can be listened to on Audible. If you choose this option, please have your child read along with the narrator.
      • You can read this book aloud to them.
      • They can read this book to themselves.

Reading Programs and Challenges
Reading Programs and Challenges in the Area are a great way to keep kids reading and reading is the BEST activity for your child’s “school brain”:

Reading Comprehension
3rd graders - finish Reading Comprehension Packet
4th and 5th graders - finish Reading Comprehension Book

Summer Writing
Keep a travel journal of trips and adventures, letter-writing/send postcards, list-making, or write a short story.  If your child does this, send it in for group sharing the first week of school!

Summer Math
The Summer Math Packet will help your child practice skills they learned this year that we will build on next year as well as math facts practice pages. Short, focused, daily practice will help your child retain the concepts and skills learned.  Your child will turn in this packet to their math teacher the first week of school in August.

There are lots of online resources like DreamBox and Prodigy as well as Apps like Math Cards, Mental Math Cards, and MentalUP for students to practice their math skills.

We hope you have a wonderful summer and we appreciate your help in preventing summer slide!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Lamb and Mrs. Lannert
