Chess Club is an 9-week session with instructor Aleksey Kazakevich, who has been teaching the game of chess to elementary students for more than 15 years. This chess program is for all levels and skills. Students will receive instruction in all aspects of the game: openings, middlegame, endgame, tactics, and strategy. They will test their newly acquired skills against each other. At the end of the session, students will participate in a tournament, with an award ceremony during the last class.**Late registrants welcome; cost will be prorated.

 

Coder Club is an 8-week session put on by the professionals at The Coder School of West County. Dennis Farnsworth will be our returning instructor! He will teach students (in grades 2 to 6) about Scratch, a visual programming language for young coders. Blocks are used to create games, tell stories and make cool graphics! Not only do kids learn how to combine elements of video, music, photos, and their own artwork to make interactive projects but, more importantly, they understand the basic elements of logic. Logic is the syntax of a command, ‘if-then’ statements, loops etc. This conceptual foundation is key to their journey as they advance into more complex programming.
